Z Warrior Mailbag – Win a Box!

Hi there! With Heroes & Villains still just a month old, the metagame is settling into place. Organized Play is on the horizon, and there certainly seems to be a calm before the storm. It is exciting to think what new developments will occur when the stakes are raised. Are you ready? I don’t think you’re ready. . .

“Will there be different sets of dragon balls introduced like in the old game.  Such as Earth Dragon Balls, Dende Dragon Balls, etc”

-Anthony P.

Definitely. You’ll generally see new sets of Dragon Balls introduced in expansions with Starter Decks, and a set of Earth Dragon Balls is likely to arrive in the near future.

“In future releases, are you planning to stick with the saga you’re on, or is everything up to that arc fair game? (if you’re in Buu saga, could we see another Nappa named card or a Saibaman ally).”

-Bobby D. from New Jersey

While new sets will progress through the various arcs of the show, there’s no need to speed through everything without revisiting some uncovered moments. Compared to the old game, you’ll see a much less restrictive release schedule (without the emphasis on a brisk pace to match episode air dates).

“Here is my idea for a card.”

-A Million People from Earth

While the enthusiasm is appreciated, we aren’t accepting any card ideas submitted by fans. Sorry!

“With Main Personalities with comparatively low Power Levels and aren’t Vegeta, given all of Saiyan’s ‘Higher Power Level’ cards, how would you build it? I tried building Gohan Saiyan from the Set 1 cards and didn’t really feel like I had enough and I felt that with my low Power Level, I was locked out of too much.”

-Erik G. from Australia

Based on current tournament data, Saiyan is being underestimated. Aside from some of the options you’ve mentioned, I feel that Goku or Trunks can be extremely powerful. In any Hero Saiyan deck, you have access to a dominant recursion engine through Saiyan Prepped Ball, Saiyan Drive By, and Saiyan Rescue. With so many options to arrange your discard pile, Saiyan Power Up also becomes exponentially more useful. Between the massive amounts of regeneration and Saiyan’s unruly Endurance, you’ll find that many Survival based matchups are heavily in your favor.

What are your thoughts on the foil cards from Heroes & Villains, and what would you change about them?

  1. I like the H&V foil patterns at times they can be maybe a touch too flashy but it looks really nice especially on personality cards. The foil style used seems to work really well on backgrounds or cards that use a lot of the same color or cards with beams on them. Good job on the heroes and Villians expansion I look forward to the new cards that come!

  2. I like the set two foils for the most part as the problem I thought from the first set was just how hard most of them are to notice. If I was going to change one thing though it would probably be the border. I think I prefer to have the border still be black and have the rest foiled.

  3. Take away the streaks and strong border. The border takes away from the cards main picture. Try a more rainbowy effect

  4. I think the foils in set 2 make a great contrast to the more muted ones in set 1 (which I also like)- I actually can’t decide between the two sets as to which ones I like more. The only thing I’d change is perhaps make the foil colour behind to be more closely aligned with the style of the card because I’d love to see super shiny red hued foils for my Red Piccolo combat tricks deck!

  5. The new foiling pattern is nice, but the Set 2 cards seemed more warped than Set 1 foils, even straight out of the pack.

  6. I think that the boarder needs to be black not foiled and the picture needs to be taken into account. Blue glare is awful but isolation looks great! it really depends on the picture!

  7. The set 2 foils look really nice! They remind me a lot of the old cards and I loved the old pattern for the old game.

One thing i’d change about it is probably keep the black border on the cards. They look better with a border imo. That’s all I can really say. 🙂

  8. I love the redesign, but the horizontal lines on the cards (between foil rolls) seem to be larger than the previous set. In a perfect world, I’d request that.

  9. I’m a fan of the new foil pattern. It’s a more dramatic effect than the foil from the first set and some cards look really nice with it, like Red City Destruction. I also like that the foils are once again changing between sets and I hope this continues in future sets!

  10. I love the new foil patterns really like the boarders also being foiled out and having them pop I do like, however on cards when only particularly areas of a card is foil to make the character or the effect on the picture pop out more.

  11. I like the Heroes and Villains foil pattern MUCH better than the first set pattern. It’s very flashy and most definitely stands out, just like foils should.
    Well done.

  12. I actually really like the foils in Heroes & Villains, as they stand out more than the Premiere set’s foils.

  13. I like the set 2 foil pattern but I feel it would look better in the normal black border. I feel only the art should have the foil pattern applied.

  14. I love the foils from the new set but what I would do to differentiate the regular foils from the ultra rares is have the dragonball on the card be shiny or have the name be shiny

  15. I use to play the original ccg back in the day. I like the style of the new foils, but, if there was one thing I would like to see in the future is full artwork foil cards. I really like the full artwork look, And I think they would make sweet promotional or random inserts in booster packs.

  16. I like the foils as I feel they stand out more than those in the premier set. They reall look good on personalities.

  17. While I do like the way the H&V foils give the illusion of a foreground and background by having more solidly inked characters, I’d prefer black borders. The current flashy foil borders distract from the image..

  18. Hey Panini, I’ve been playing since 2000 and I must say that I love this foil pattern a lot. Next time keep the border black is what I would suggest. In some sleeves I can see the silver border when the deck is sitting idle and if I only have a few foils I can know what card is coming up. To prevent this from causing a negative impact to the games environment, keeping the borders black always and forever will be awesome. Now the BEST foil pattern is STILL the Android saga pattern … Good god, Android’s 18’s Staredown and Champion Drill just look insane. If you bring back that foil pattern I believe the fans would love it. Save it for a future expansion.

  19. What are your thoughts on the foil cards from Heroes & Villains, and what would you change about them?

Without a doubt the new foil pattern is nice and is quite appealing to the eye compared to set one where some cards you can’t tell if they are foil or not. The new set it looks like the card is doing a power up lol.

Things that I would change about the new foil is have more contrast between the foil parts on non foil parts. For example a foil background and flat image of the character with certain features with the foil pattern such as the eyes and energy auras. Even negatives would people go crazy for where you do the opposite with a flat background and a foil image of the character.
