Z Warrior Mailbag – Win a Box!

Hi there! With Heroes & Villains still just a month old, the metagame is settling into place. Organized Play is on the horizon, and there certainly seems to be a calm before the storm. It is exciting to think what new developments will occur when the stakes are raised. Are you ready? I don’t think you’re ready. . .

“Will there be different sets of dragon balls introduced like in the old game.  Such as Earth Dragon Balls, Dende Dragon Balls, etc”

-Anthony P.

Definitely. You’ll generally see new sets of Dragon Balls introduced in expansions with Starter Decks, and a set of Earth Dragon Balls is likely to arrive in the near future.

“In future releases, are you planning to stick with the saga you’re on, or is everything up to that arc fair game? (if you’re in Buu saga, could we see another Nappa named card or a Saibaman ally).”

-Bobby D. from New Jersey

While new sets will progress through the various arcs of the show, there’s no need to speed through everything without revisiting some uncovered moments. Compared to the old game, you’ll see a much less restrictive release schedule (without the emphasis on a brisk pace to match episode air dates).

“Here is my idea for a card.”

-A Million People from Earth

While the enthusiasm is appreciated, we aren’t accepting any card ideas submitted by fans. Sorry!

“With Main Personalities with comparatively low Power Levels and aren’t Vegeta, given all of Saiyan’s ‘Higher Power Level’ cards, how would you build it? I tried building Gohan Saiyan from the Set 1 cards and didn’t really feel like I had enough and I felt that with my low Power Level, I was locked out of too much.”

-Erik G. from Australia

Based on current tournament data, Saiyan is being underestimated. Aside from some of the options you’ve mentioned, I feel that Goku or Trunks can be extremely powerful. In any Hero Saiyan deck, you have access to a dominant recursion engine through Saiyan Prepped Ball, Saiyan Drive By, and Saiyan Rescue. With so many options to arrange your discard pile, Saiyan Power Up also becomes exponentially more useful. Between the massive amounts of regeneration and Saiyan’s unruly Endurance, you’ll find that many Survival based matchups are heavily in your favor.

What are your thoughts on the foil cards from Heroes & Villains, and what would you change about them?

  1. I generally like the way the new foils look. One issue I do have with them though is that a few that I have gotten have a noticable line running the short length of the card about a quarter inch from the bottom. If that can be fixed, I think they would be perfect.

    • i’m not sold on the new foil pattern, i think they are too blingy and the set 1 foils were too subtle, definitely a step in the right direction though. i like the bling on the ultra rares though!

    • Hey, I am very impressed with the new foil pattern it’s a huge step up from the set 1 foils which where ,in my opinion, underwhelming. One issue I’ve notice with the set 2 foils is that on a few that I’ve pulled from packs there are horizontal lines disrupting the foil pattern (even on the ultra rare I pulled which was slightly a bummer). Overall, I think these new foils are great and don’t need much change (except maybe tinting the foil color to reflect the cards style that would really make it pop). Thanks

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed the new set’s foil pattern if for no other reason than it is a vast contrast to the last set’s. The last foils were ok, but they weren’t noticeable and easily over looked. I will say that I hope the production errors from the foil patterns get worked out.

One thing I would like to see from the future foil patterns would be a take on the full art card seen in other games. It doesn’t have to be every card, but maybe something along the line of promos or tournament/event cards. As cool as alternate art foils are, how much cooler would a “Goku’s Kamehameha” or “Frieza’s Super Nova” look if the art took up the entire card?

  3. The Dragon Ball Z Panini Set 2 foils are very eye catching. They look much better in person and they make for a great collection. The all foil border looks good and the foils. If I could change one thing about them, I would allow the foil pattern for each card to reflect the color of the style more. For example, I would have the foil pattern on the red style cards tinted slightly red, etc. Great job on the foils Panini, can’t wait for the next ones.

  4. The old foil pattern was barely noticeable, but I feel the new foil pattern is a bit overdone. It is an improvement though. I think somewhere in the middle of the two would be a great place for foils to be.

  5. I agree with everyone that the foils in set 2 are better. Sets 2’s are a step in the right direction, but I’d like to see something that has the best aspects of set 1 and 2 together if possible.
Set 1 had a nice pattern overall and more importantly covered all of the cards art, it just wasn’t reflective at the proper angle
Set two is properly shiny, but on some cards I really wish the effect of the foil could be over more of the art
(Trunks sword Stance from set 2 is a perfect example. Great foil overall, just parts of his coat look a little flat and non-foiled)

  6. Initially, I much preferred the subtlety of Set 1 foils. The silver foil of the newest set has grown on me, but I think it may be a bit overkill. Finding a happy place between the two would be ideal.

  7. Hello! I’ve played many card games in my day. But none hold a candle to set 2’s foil template! Yugi–NO!!!

  8. In comparison to the first set, I think they’re amazing. Like many others have said, I believe the foils would look better with a black border. Moving on to future sets, I think similar foils to Pokemon’s ultra rares/full arts or Yugioh’s ultimate rares would be cool to see if that were possible. Anyways, keep up the good work. I’m having a lot of fun with the game so far!

  10. Rainbow Spaghetti, they grow on you, they standout alot better from the first set, so a much better art direction to be taking.

  11. I like the foils this set. While they are much louder than set 1’s, they aren’t foiled over text or the whole image like some card games do. In the future I’d like to see specific parts of the art foiled rather than going whole card (foiled energy attacks, specific colors, angry foil eyes, etc)

  12. I’d focus on really making the foils less warped. I feel like I have to bust out my textbooks to flatten them down the night before a tournament.

  13. I just started collecting last week and opened a box of Heroes and Villians yesterday. I am very pleased with the new foil pattern and I love how it extends to the card boarders. I think this makes for a unique look that would attract the eye of “non” DBZ players as they pass people playing. Thanks for listening to your player base, I can see people opinions and thought matter and that’s important in my book.

  14. The foils in the Heroes and Villains set is pretty good, but I think it is a little over the top. It might have been better to save the pattern for a promo set or something like that. However, I also think that the foils in set 1 were a little underwhelming. With all that being said, I love the cards and the game! Any foil pattern that ya’ll choose is okay in my books, as long as you keep ’em coming!

  15. I understand that the foils are a harken back to old Score cards, but I just don’t like the foil pattern, it’s TOO obvious. Maybe choosing a different foil pattern next time would be better.

  16. I love the new design, the occasional line printed in the foil is a bummer and makes some foils hard to trade.

  17. I like the new foils and I feel my slight indifference to them is due mostly to the entire card being foiled, edges included. As many others have said, it would be nice to maintain the edges as a black border, but realistically, all I care about is a repeat Android Saga foil pattern…

Keep up the good work guys!

  18. The foiling in Set 2 was quite excellent! Was also curious like the old game if along with foil patterns changing if there were also going to be card changes like the different symbols for sets and also the different format for cards like cell saga vs buu saga as example!

  19. I like the foil pattern on Heroes and Villains.
It makes it look borderless, which is a nice change of pace.
There is a noticeable line where the foil cards lack the texture in places that could be addressed.

From the Score game, my favorite foil pattern was from Androids Sage with the Striated background foiling.

  20. I do like the new pattern better than the first, but i’m not real keen on the full foil cards. I like when only part of the art is highlighted by foil. Like hair, or energy burst. Something that sets that particular card apart from all the rest.

  21. I feel that the Set 2 foils are just too much. Yes they definitely stand out when flipping through cards, but its seems like it does so in a somewhat obnoxious way. I think it would be much better if the borders at least were tinted to match the card’s style.

  22. The foils are nice, but there are lines that cross through the foil pattern that are just too clashing to not notice. Its an imperfection on an otherwise really good foil pattern.

  23. The foils are very eye catching, really putting that extra importance them, and the illustrations featured on them are nice and very reminiscent of the way old DBZ characters looked up on the small screen.

  24. The new foils for set 2 are so much better then the foils for set 1. The thing that i really like about them is how visually striking they are. In set 1 you could have a foil in your hand, in play, or as your main personality and it really didn’t matter cause you almost couldn’t tell it was a foil. Now with the new set @ foils everyone knows you are awesome and have foil cards because they are impossible to miss.

  25. I love the new foil pattern, its easy to spot them as soon as you open a booster. I would like it better if ultra rares had a different foil unique to them. maybe have the rares be holo on the card text and image only and the ultra rares have the current holo which includes the entire card including the borders.

  26. I really like how the foils pop, The inclusion of the border being foil was a great idea. One thing I would like to see is in the future is making only certain parts of the background image foil so that the image pops. Kind of like a reverse foil if that makes sense.

  27. I think the foils are a bit much. I understand you want to really distinguish between a normal card and a foil, but the subtle ones in set ones were done better. I felt that the new foils were closer to those ones you see in flashy games like YuGiOh. And people with OCD would want to have the borders the same. Keep the way you did it in set one, but if you wanted to do different patterns to distinguish between sets, that would be good, and collectable.

  28. Really thought the foil pattern for Heroes and Villains was awesome. Definitely leaps and bounds over Set 1 foils (save the URs in Set 1 looked pretty good) If I had to see a different foil pattern be used for the next Set, the ones from the Android or Buy Saga be sweet.

  29. I think that the new foil card look great. The foil cards from the first set could be missed if you aren’t in the right lighting. The new ones are noticable right away, though.

  31. I like the new flow pattern it’s much better than the first that I particularly like the fact you can tell it’s foil as soon as you see it Which is much better than the first sub because you actually had to maneuver that hard around to see if it was foil or not.

  32. I like how it’s become easier to get foil cards, they seem to be in more packs than before. I don’t like the silver foil, I like the pattern, but I wish it was the color of the card grouping as in the first set.

  33. What are your thoughts on the foil cards from Heroes & Villains, and what would you change about them?

I really thing this design is an improvement over the first set. I do however think that it may work well for future sets if the foil pattern was to incorporate the general theme of the set. An example would be when the android saga begins. Using a foil pattern that used circuits or gears would fit very well and would lend itself to the flavor. Another example would be to use generic candy shape such as… (>O<) … as the foil pattern for the buu set.

  34. I like how different the H&V foils look compared to the regular cards, they really stand out. I also feel like for that very reason that they are a little over the top, maybe a middle ground between Base set and H&V foils is the sweet spot?

  35. The foiling on this set was a lot better than on the last set. Freestyle cards especially looked amazing. The foil on this set will only become bothersome if the foiling on future sets differs too drastically.

  36. i am extemely happy with the new look of the foils, i like hat for set 1 and this set the foils are different. It is nice to see a new pattern with every set. I would hope that, this keeps up and that each set is going to have its own type of foil.

  37. While the new foil pattern stands out far more than the original pattern but I personally prefer the foil style from the score era Saiyan saga. ie. no pattern just painted chrome, very nice looking.
Also I had a lot of trouble getting a full set of cards I was happy with for set 2 as every pack I opened out of 96 packs had at least one card but sometimes more cards that had paint chipped around the edges from commons to rares. also all of the foils also have pretty severe overhang of the clear plastic coat on the front of the cards as if the cutting die used to cut the cards wasn’t sharp enough.
This makes it nearly impossible to get a mint set as the cards come with random factory damage fresh out of the pack.
This was very disappointing as I spent quite a bit of money importing them to Australia and I didn’t have the issue with the first set.

  38. Since I don’t collect the foils, I like that they are easily distinguishable from the non-foils. It makes them easier to separate out for trade.

However, I have to say that if I was playing the foil cards, I wouldn’t like how they clash with the rest of the cards. I think, primarily, I wouldn’t have the borders foiled.

    I like the pattern, though!

  41. I like them a lot! People have mentioned the line that runs through many of them, but it doesn’t bother me at all. Others have also pointed out the borders, but I like the bleed effect with these. My only complaint is that set 1 didn’t have the same pattern!
